Junaith S. Mohamed, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Medical Laboratory Sciences at the College of Health Professions at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). After obtaining his Ph.D. Degree, Dr. Mohamed received his post-doctoral training from The University of Texas at Austin and Baylor College of Medicine and he moved to West Virginia University and then to his current position at UTHSC. Dr. Mohamed’s research has focused on functional genomics and bioinformatics approaches to study the epigenetic signaling mechanisms that regulate skeletal muscle mass and function to understand how aging and neuromuscular disorders, including stroke, induce muscle atrophy and weakness as well as to develop appropriate therapies that will prevent, retard, or reverse muscle atrophy and weakness. To address his research questions, Dr. Mohamed uses several state-of-the-art genetic, cell, and molecular biology techniques, bioinformatics tools, in vitro and in vivo experiments, and mouse models of human diseases. He also uses microarray and next-generation sequencing technologies to explore how genome-wide chromatin and transcriptome changes affect skeletal muscle mass and function.
